A fresh political crisis is brewing within the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kano State over the sharing of elective positions between longstanding party members and recent entrants aligned with the Kwankwasiyya Movement led by Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
According to reports, disagreements emerged after allegations that the initial power-sharing arrangement between the two blocs was not fully respected during the selection of candidates for the 2027 general elections. The arrangement reportedly allocated 60 percent of party positions and candidacies to the Kwankwasiyya bloc, while existing NDC members were to retain 40 percent.
Party insiders claimed that some longstanding NDC members felt sidelined during the nomination process and subsequently pushed for a review of the candidate list. The development led to changes in several House of Representatives and State Assembly tickets in Kano State.
The dispute has reignited concerns about internal cohesion within the party, especially following the recent political alliance between the NDC and the Kwankwasiyya Movement. While party leaders previously intervened to resolve disagreements over control of the party structure, the latest controversy suggests that tensions remain unresolved.
Observers say the outcome of the dispute could have significant implications for the NDC’s preparations for the 2027 elections, particularly in Kano, one of Nigeria’s most politically influential states. Despite the growing tension, party stakeholders have continued consultations aimed at preserving unity and preventing further divisions within the party.
Kano first

The NDC recently affirmed a joint presidential ticket involving Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso for the 2027 election cycle, making internal stability a crucial factor for the party’s electoral ambitions.
