Kebbi Expands Early Childhood Education with N1.59bn Investment

The Kebbi State Government says it has invested more than N1.59 billion in the development of about 590 Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centres located across primary schools in the state over the last three years.

The Executive Chairman of the Kebbi State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Professor Suleiman Khalid Jega, disclosed this during the celebration of the 2026 International Day of Play, organised by UNICEF in collaboration with SUBEB at Kaura Gwandu Model Primary School in Birnin Kebbi.

Professor Jega said the administration of Governor Nasir Idris places a high premium on early childhood education, recognising it as the foundation for lifelong learning, growth and development.

According to him, the state government has consistently demonstrated its commitment to strengthening the sector by dedicating 15 per cent of the annual intervention funds received by the board to the development of ECD centres.

He noted that substantial investments have been made to improve learning environments for young children, stressing that a strong educational foundation remains critical to future academic success and overall development.

The SUBEB chairman also commended development partners, particularly UNICEF, for their sustained support towards child development programmes in the state through financial and technical assistance.

Also speaking, the Executive Secretary of SUBEB, Alhaji Umar Hassan, said the day was established to ensure that children enjoy their fundamental right to play.

According to him, regular play activities contribute significantly to children’s cognitive, psychomotor, emotional and social development, thereby improving learning outcomes and overall educational growth.

The celebration featured a variety of activities, including games, recreational exercises and fun competitions, providing pupils with opportunities to learn, interact and develop important life skills through play.

Stakeholders at the event reaffirmed the importance of creating safe and stimulating environments that enable children to learn, grow and thrive through play and quality early childhood education.

Speaking at the event, UNICEF Focal Person, Mr. Nuhu Haruna, explained that the International Day of Play is observed globally to promote children’s right to play and encourage activities that support their physical, emotional and social development.

He appreciated stakeholders for their support and participation in making the celebration successful.
