Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening democratic governance, promoting national unity, and addressing the challenges confronting the country as Nigeria prepares to commemorate the 27th Democracy Day on June 12.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated this on Friday after a special Juma’at prayer organised in Abuja as part of activities marking the annual Democracy Day celebration.

According to the minister, the prayer session provided an opportunity for Nigerians to seek divine guidance for the nation while reflecting on their collective responsibility toward sustaining peace, stability, and national development.

“Today, we joined millions of Nigerians in offering prayers for our nation as part of activities marking the 27th Democracy Day celebration, which takes place on June 12, 2026,” Idris said.

described Democracy Day as an important occasion for celebrating the strength of Nigeria’s democratic institutions and the enduring commitment of citizens to constitutional governance.

“Twenty-seven years of uninterrupted democratic governance testify to the resilience of our democracy and the determination of our people to uphold democratic values,” he stated.

The minister reiterated the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to deepening democratic governance, strengthening institutions, and fostering national cohesion.

“Under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Federal Government remains committed to strengthening democratic governance, promoting national unity, and addressing the challenges confronting our nation,” he added.

Idris urged Nigerians to embrace peaceful coexistence, tolerance, and responsible citizenship, noting that the country’s progress depends largely on unity and collective efforts.

“As we celebrate Democracy Day, let us renew our commitment to unity, peaceful coexistence, and responsible citizenship. Nigeria’s strength lies in our diversity, and our future depends on our ability to work together in the interest of our nation,” he said.

He further called on citizens to reject divisive tendencies and embrace dialogue, mutual understanding, and values that strengthen democracy and national integration.

“Let us continue to reject division, embrace dialogue, and promote values that strengthen our democracy and foster national cohesion,” he stated.

Expressing optimism about Nigeria’s future, the minister said the country possesses the capacity to overcome its challenges and build a stronger and more prosperous nation for future generations.

The special prayer session attracted several prominent political leaders and government officials, including Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima, Chairman of the Northern Governors’ Forum and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, the immediate past National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Chairperson of the Board of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, as well as the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari.

The event formed part of activities lined up to commemorate Nigeria’s 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule since the return to civilian governance in 1999.
