Governance succeeds not only through policies and projects but also through effective communication. When citizens are informed, they become partners in development, when they are left uninformed, misunderstanding, mistrust, and misinformation thrive. It is for this reason that the recent unveiling of the Digital Multimedia Department and the inauguration of the Forum of Directors of Public Enlightenment and Public Relations Officers by the Kano State Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs deserve widespread commendation.
The initiative represents far more than an administrative restructuring. It is a strategic investment in transparency, accountability, public enlightenment, and citizen engagement. It demonstrates a clear recognition by the Kano State Government that the demands of modern governance can no longer be met through conventional communication methods alone.
In today’s digital age, information travels faster than ever before. Governments that fail to adapt risk losing control of their narratives and creating gaps that are often filled by speculation and misinformation. The establishment of a dedicated Digital Multimedia Department is therefore a timely and forward-looking response to contemporary realities.
The department is expected to strengthen government visibility, improve policy communication, document developmental activities, enhance digital engagement, and provide citizens with timely and credible information. More importantly, it offers an institutional framework through which government can maintain a closer and more meaningful relationship with the people it serves.
Special recognition must be given to the Honourable Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, whose leadership has brought remarkable dynamism, innovation, and purpose to the ministry. Since assuming office, Waiya has demonstrated that a Ministry of Information should be more than a ceremonial government outlet, it should be a strategic institution that connects government with the people.
Under his stewardship, the ministry has witnessed a visible transformation. It has become increasingly active, accessible, and responsive. What was once viewed largely as a routine government establishment is steadily evolving into a vibrant centre for information dissemination, public engagement, policy advocacy, and community interaction.
Indeed, the ministry today reflects the energy and vision of a leadership determined to make communication an essential pillar of governance. Through regular engagement with stakeholders, media practitioners, civil society groups, academics, and community leaders, the ministry has become one of the most active platforms for promoting dialogue between government and citizens.
Kano first

The inauguration of the Forum of Directors of Public Enlightenment and Public Relations Officers is another laudable achievement. Effective communication requires coordination and professionalism across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies. By creating a platform that encourages collaboration, information sharing, and strategic alignment, the ministry is laying the foundation for a more coherent and efficient government communication system.
Equally commendable was Comrade Waiya’s personal gesture of donating One Million Naira to support the newly inaugurated forum. Beyond the monetary value, the contribution reflects a leadership style that is committed not only to initiating reforms but also to supporting their sustainability and success.
It is therefore unsurprising that communication scholars, media professionals, and public relations experts have welcomed these reforms. Their endorsement reinforces the significance of the initiative and highlights its potential to strengthen Kano State’s communication architecture for years to come.
Credit must also go to His Excellency, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, for approving the establishment of the Digital Multimedia Department. The decision aligns perfectly with the administration’s commitment to people-oriented governance under the Kano First Agenda. It demonstrates an understanding that development is not measured solely by roads, schools, hospitals, and physical infrastructure, but also by the ability of government to communicate effectively with its citizens.
Across the world, successful governments invest heavily in communication because they understand that public trust is built through openness, transparency, and engagement. Kano State’s latest reforms place it firmly on that path.
The task ahead is to sustain the momentum. The Digital Multimedia Department should be adequately equipped with modern technology, skilled personnel, and continuous professional development opportunities. The newly inaugurated forum should likewise be strengthened to ensure that government communication remains consistent, professional, and citizen-centred.
Nevertheless, the direction is clear and the progress is evident. Kano State is witnessing the emergence of a more proactive and modern communication system, one that recognizes information as a powerful tool for development and social cohesion.
For this bold vision and transformative leadership, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya deserves special commendation. His efforts are gradually redefining the role of the Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs, transforming it into a busy hub of information, public enlightenment, digital engagement, and community participation.
At a time when many public institutions struggle to connect with citizens, Kano’s Ministry of Information is setting an example worth emulating. The unveiling of the Digital Multimedia Department is not merely a bureaucratic reform, it is a statement of intent that government communication must evolve to meet the expectations of the modern age.
If sustained, this initiative will not only strengthen public confidence in government but also deepen democratic participation and reinforce the bond between government and the people. That is a legacy worth building and a vision worthy of applause.
