In every society, there are individuals whose dedication to public service rises above political differences and earns the admiration of both supporters and critics alike. One such individual is the Honourable Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Kano State, Comrade Abdullahi Ibrahim Waiya, whose recent recognition with the WINSEC Award for Excellence in Strategic Communication is both timely and well deserved.
As a member of the APC Intellectuals Forum, I firmly believe that excellence should always be acknowledged, irrespective of political affiliation. When public officials distinguish themselves through integrity, professionalism, and impactful service, they deserve commendation. This is how we strengthen our democracy and encourage a culture of accountability and performance.
The award presented to Comrade Waiya at the Women in Security Summit and Awards (WINSEC) 2026 in Abuja is not merely another plaque to decorate an office. It is a national recognition of his commitment to strategic communication, transparency, and responsible public engagement. At a time when misinformation and disinformation pose serious threats to governance and national unity, effective communication has become an indispensable tool of leadership.
Since assuming office as Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Waiya has demonstrated exceptional competence in managing government communication, fostering stronger relations with the media, and ensuring that the people remain informed about government policies and programmes. His calm disposition, accessibility, and commitment to truth have earned him widespread respect within media circles and beyond.
Leadership is measured not only by the offices one occupies but also by the positive impact one makes. Comrade Waiya has consistently shown that public communication should educate, unite, and inspire confidence among citizens. His approach reflects a deep understanding of the responsibilities that come with public office.
As members of the APC Intellectuals Forum, we believe constructive criticism is essential in a democracy, but so is the willingness to acknowledge excellence wherever it exists. Commending good performance does not diminish our political convictions; rather, it reinforces our commitment to objective leadership and national development.
It is my hope that this prestigious recognition will inspire Comrade Waiya to continue raising the standard of public communication in Kano State and Nigeria. It should also serve as a challenge to other public office holders to embrace professionalism, accountability, and service to the people.
