The Federal Government has suspended the proposed increase in the registration fees for the 2027 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WAEC) and the National Examinations Council (NECO), pending further consultations with relevant stakeholders.
The decision was announced by the Federal Ministry of Education, which confirmed that it had withdrawn its earlier letter dated June 18, 2026, approving the proposed fee adjustment. The suspension follows widespread public reactions and concerns expressed by parents, education stakeholders, and other Nigerians.
According to the Ministry, the suspension reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to inclusive, transparent, and evidence-based policymaking. It stated that no increase in examination registration fees will take effect until comprehensive consultations with examination bodies, state ministries of education, school proprietors, parents’ associations, labour unions, and other stakeholders have been concluded.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that any future decision on examination fees is fair, sustainable, and takes into account the prevailing economic realities while safeguarding access to quality education for Nigerian students.
