President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a six-month extension of the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi.
According to a statement issued on Friday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Adeniyi’s current tenure was due to expire on August 1, 2026.
The extension, which will now run until February 2027, was approved to enable the Customs boss to complete key ongoing reforms, particularly the implementation of the National Single Window project, and to ensure a smooth leadership transition within the service.

The Presidency stated that during the extension period, Adeniyi will work closely with the Customs Board to conclude the promotion of qualified officers to the rank of Comptroller and oversee the mandatory retirement of officers who have reached the age of 60 or completed 35 years in public service.
Adeniyi joined the Nigeria Customs Service after graduating from Obafemi Awolowo University in the late 1980s. He rose through the ranks, becoming Assistant Comptroller-General in 2012, Comptroller in 2017, Deputy Comptroller-General in 2020, and Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in January 2023.
President Tinubu appointed him as Comptroller-General of Customs in June 2023. The latest extension is expected to support the continuation of ongoing reforms and modernization efforts within the Nigeria Customs Service.
