The sharp increase in cooking gas prices in Kano State is forcing many households, students, and small businesses to switch back to charcoal and firewood as more affordable cooking alternatives.
Residents told Brown Pigeon News that refilling a 3kg gas cylinder now costs about ₦5,040, compared to around ₦3,100 previously. Charcoal traders report growing demand as families struggle with rising food, transport, and electricity costs.
Many residents say they now reserve gas for minor tasks while relying mainly on charcoal and firewood for daily cooking. Students have also been affected, with some already purchasing charcoal stoves to reduce expenses.
The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has warned that rising gas prices could push more Nigerians away from cleaner energy sources, increasing health and environmental risks. Residents are calling on government authorities to take urgent measures to stabilize cooking gas prices and ease the burden on households.
