The Deputy President of the Senate, Barau I. Jibrin, has emerged as the most active lawmaker in Nigeria’s 10th Senate in terms of private member bill sponsorship, having sponsored a total of 42 bills within three years.
According to records from the Senate and details published in The Parliamentarian magazine, Senator Barau sponsored the bills between June 13, 2023, and June 13, 2026, a period marking the first three years of the 10th National Assembly.
The 10th National Assembly was inaugurated on June 13, 2023, following its proclamation by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. As the legislature marks its third anniversary, Senator Barau’s legislative record has drawn attention as one of the most remarkable in the current assembly.
The figures show that the Deputy Senate President sponsored 13 bills in 2023, nine in 2024, seventeen in 2025, and three in 2026, bringing the total to 42.
Out of these bills, five have successfully passed into law. They include the establishment of the North West Development Commission, the National Identity Management Commission (Repeal and Re-enactment) Act, the Agricultural Research Council Act (Amendment), the establishment of the Federal Medical Centre, Gwarzo, Kano State, and the establishment of the Federal University of Science and Technology, Kabo.
The sponsored bills cut across several critical sectors, including education, healthcare, agriculture, governance, constitutional reforms, technology, renewable energy, industrial development, and economic growth.
Among the notable bills introduced by Senator Barau are the Renewable Energy Bill, Government Performance and Accountability Bill, E-Health Bill, Cryptocurrency Prohibition and Regulation Bill, Nigeria First Manufacturing Sector Development and Competitiveness Bill, and several constitutional amendment bills aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s democratic and governance framework.

Speaking on the achievement, the Special Adviser to the Deputy President of the Senate on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, described the feat as a reflection of Senator Barau’s commitment to legislative excellence and national development.
He noted that sponsoring 42 bills within three years represents a significant contribution to lawmaking and policy development, especially considering Senator Barau’s responsibilities as Deputy Senate President and his leadership role in the ECOWAS Parliament, where he serves as First Deputy Speaker.
Political observers say the volume and diversity of the bills demonstrate Senator Barau’s focus on institutional reforms, infrastructure development, education expansion, economic competitiveness, and improved public service delivery.
As the 10th Senate celebrates its third anniversary, Senator Barau’s legislative record stands as one of the defining benchmarks of the current National Assembly’s lawmaking activities.Brown Pigeon News Publications
