The Kano State Government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate the beginning of the Islamic New Year, 1448AH (1st Muharram).
The declaration was approved by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and conveyed in a circular issued by the Office of the Head of Civil Service, Kano State, dated June 15, 2026.
According to the circular, the public holiday is in recognition of the significance of the Islamic calendar and the long-standing tradition of observing the Islamic New Year in Kano State.

The government directed that all workers across the state should observe the holiday and use the occasion for sober reflection and prayers for continued peace, stability, progress, and prosperity in Kano State and Nigeria as a whole.
The circular, signed by Safiyya Ali Suleiman, Director of Administration and General Services, on behalf of the Head of Civil Service, was addressed to all Ministries, Departments, Agencies, government-owned institutions, and parastatals.
The Islamic New Year, which begins with the month of Muharram, is one of the most important dates in the Muslim calendar and is traditionally marked with prayers and reflection. Kano State has previously declared public holidays to mark the commencement of the Islamic year.
