Since his appointment as Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs in January 2025, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya has brought a strong focus on strategic communication, professional information management, media engagement and public enlightenment to the Kano State Government.
His tenure has increasingly positioned the Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs as an important bridge between the government and the people of Kano State.
Strengthening Government Communication
One of Comrade Waiya’s major contributions has been the effort to improve the way government policies, programmes and decisions are communicated to the public. Under his leadership, the ministry has emphasized timely dissemination of information and proactive engagement with journalists and media organisations.
The ministry has also stressed the importance of professionalism, accuracy and responsible journalism in an era where misinformation and fake news can spread rapidly through social media.
Promotion of Digital and Modern Communication
Recognising the changing nature of journalism and public communication, Comrade Waiya has supported greater engagement with digital media practitioners and encouraged the use of modern communication channels to reach citizens.
This approach reflects the reality that government information can no longer depend solely on traditional newspapers, radio and television. The ministry has increasingly embraced multimedia communication and stronger coordination among government information officers.
Capacity Building for Information Officers
Another significant achievement has been the emphasis on professional development.
The ministry organised capacity-building programmes for Information Officers from the 44 Local Government Areas, alongside interactions with editors and news managers. The objective was to strengthen the ability of officers to collect, process and disseminate accurate and timely information from the grassroots.
The Kano State Local Government Information Officers Forum later recognised Comrade Waiya with an Award of Excellence, citing his contribution to professional development, training and improved welfare of information officers.
Establishment of an Advisory Council
At the beginning of his tenure, Comrade Waiya initiated the Kano State Ministry of Information Advisory Council, bringing experienced media professionals together to provide guidance on information management, media practice and public communication.
The initiative was designed to strengthen the credibility of government communication, improve media standards and contribute to the fight against misinformation.
Improved Media-Government Relationship
Comrade Waiya has also promoted regular engagement between government and the media. The ministry has maintained that journalists should have an enabling environment to perform their constitutional responsibilities while encouraging professionalism, objectivity and development-oriented journalism.
The government has further reiterated its commitment to press freedom and dialogue with media practitioners and stakeholders.
Crisis Communication and Public Enlightenment
Perhaps one of the strongest areas associated with Comrade Waiya’s tenure is crisis communication.
As the official spokesperson of the Kano State Government, he has frequently responded to sensitive issues, clarified government positions and provided information to the public during periods of uncertainty.
His work in this area received national recognition when he was honoured in August 2026 with the Crisis Communicator Award at the National Spokespersons Awards in Abuja. The recognition highlighted his role in timely, accurate and responsible public communication.
Information Management and Public Accountability
Through regular press statements, briefings and official communications, the Commissioner has worked to ensure that the public receives government explanations on major policies, security developments, programmes and decisions.
His communication approach has helped provide a direct channel through which citizens can understand the position of the Kano State Government on issues affecting their daily lives.
Peace, Security and Internal Affairs
As Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Waiya has also been involved in communicating government efforts on peace, security and internal affairs.
For example, following the rescue of the Administrative Secretary of Kibiya Local Government and the arrest of suspected kidnappers in March 2026, the ministry provided the public with information about the operation and commended the security agencies involved.
This demonstrates the ministry’s role not only as an information institution but also as an important component of the state’s public-security communication architecture.
Recognition Beyond Kano
The growing recognition of Comrade Waiya’s communication work has extended beyond Kano State. His emergence as a finalist in the 2026 National Spokespersons Awards was welcomed by the NUJ Information Chapel in Kano, which attributed the recognition to his professionalism, proactive media engagement and responsible handling of sensitive public issues.
His subsequent emergence as a Crisis Communicator Award recipient further strengthened that recognition at the national level.
Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya’s tenure as Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs can be viewed as a period of increasing emphasis on strategic communication, digital engagement, professional development, media relations, crisis communication and public enlightenment.
His approach has sought to make government communication more responsive to the realities of modern governance, where citizens expect timely, accurate and accessible information.
For Kano State, the importance of an effective information ministry goes beyond publicity. It involves building trust between government and citizens, correcting misinformation, explaining policies and ensuring that the people remain informed about developments across the state.
The Crisis Communicator Award received by Comrade Waiya in 2026 therefore represents not only a personal recognition but also an acknowledgement of the growing importance of professional public communication in governance.
Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Kano State remains a prominent voice in communicating the policies, programmes and priorities of the Abba Kabir Yusuf administration to the people of Kano State.
