Kano, July 21, 2026 – The Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, has called on Information Officers serving across Local Government Areas, Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to intensify efforts in promoting accurate and timely reporting of government activities.
The Commissioner made the call during an engagement meeting with Information Officers held at the Ministry’s headquarters on Tuesday.
Waiya disclosed that the Ministry is introducing new strategies to improve the dissemination of information on government projects, programmes and policies, particularly those being implemented in rural communities and across all government institutions in the state.
According to him, the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is currently executing more than 1,500 projects across Kano State’s 44 Local Government Areas, with about 750 projects already completed, while the remaining projects are at various stages of execution.
He emphasized that Information Officers have a professional responsibility to keep citizens informed about government activities while also serving as a bridge between the government and the people by communicating public needs and aspirations.
To enhance public awareness, Waiya announced the introduction of two additional weekly radio programmes dedicated to reporting activities of Local Government Councils and MDAs. He also revealed that the Ministry is producing a monthly magazine highlighting government achievements across the state.
The Commissioner, however, expressed concern that some Information Officers were not meeting reporting expectations and urged them to improve their performance.
He further stressed the need for stronger collaboration among Information Officers, noting that they all share the same professional responsibility regardless of their places of assignment. He encouraged them to foster unity, professionalism and teamwork while avoiding unnecessary divisions.
Waiya assured the officers of the government’s commitment to providing working tools, capacity-building opportunities and logistical support to enhance their efficiency.
As part of efforts to encourage excellence, he announced the reintroduction of a monthly reward system, under which the best-performing Information Officer would receive recognition and a gift based on performance assessment.
Speaking at the meeting, the Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Kabiru Musa Sulaiman, urged the officers to remain punctual, committed and dedicated to their duties. He commended Commissioner Waiya for introducing reforms that have significantly improved the operations of the Information Department.
Earlier, the Director of Information, Ameen Kabir Yassar, explained that the meeting was convened to identify and address challenges affecting the effective performance of Information Officers.
He reiterated that with numerous developmental projects being executed across the state’s 44 Local Government Areas and MDAs, it remains the statutory responsibility of Information Officers to ensure that members of the public are adequately informed.
The Information Officers, in their remarks, commended Commissioner Waiya for his commitment to reorganising and strengthening the state’s information dissemination system, describing the reforms as vital to improving public communication and service delivery.
