KANO RISING: A GOVERNMENT THAT FEELS THE PEOPLE’S PAIN AND ACTS WITH PURPOSE

There are moments when governance transcends policy and becomes deeply human. The outcome of Kano State’s 39th Executive Council Meeting of 28th April 2026 is one of those moments.

The ₦79.49 billion approved is not merely a fiscal decision, it is a reflection of priorities shaped by the real needs of the people.

Under the leadership of Abba Kabir Yusuf, the direction is clear, invest in people, restore systems, and rebuild public confidence.

I. Education: Restoring Hope and Opportunity

The decision to fund external examination fees and settle outstanding liabilities for students addresses a long-standing burden on families. Beyond that, investments in classrooms, school rehabilitation, and learning materials signal a deliberate effort to strengthen the foundation of the state’s future.

ii. Healthcare: Quiet Interventions, Lasting Impact

The focus on free maternal and child healthcare, routine immunization, and emergency health responses reflects a people-first approach. These are interventions that may not always be visible, but their impact is profound, healthier communities, safer childbirth, and stronger public health systems.

Upgrades to hospitals and primary healthcare centres further reinforce a commitment to accessible and functional healthcare delivery.

iii. Infrastructure and Water: Improving Everyday Life

Strategic road projects and urban renewal efforts point to a government attentive to mobility and city development. However, the substantial investment in water infrastructure stands out most. Reliable access to clean water is essential, and this commitment addresses a critical need for households and businesses alike.

iv. Agriculture and Inclusion: Strengthening the Backbone of the Economy

Support for farmers through fertilizer procurement and irrigation improvements demonstrates an understanding of agriculture’s central role in Kano’s economy. At the same time, empowerment initiatives and youth rehabilitation programmes reflect a broader commitment to inclusion and social stability.

A Clear Direction, A Greater Responsibility

The breadth of these approvals shows a government working across sectors, education, health, infrastructure, environment, and governance reform. It is a comprehensive approach that balances immediate needs with long-term development.

Yet, the true measure of success will be in execution. Timely delivery, transparency, and accountability will determine whether these commitments translate into tangible change.

For now, the administration of Abba Kabir Yusuf has set a strong tone, one that resonates with purpose and responsiveness. If sustained, it holds the promise of meaningful progress for Kano State and its people.
