
Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has commended the Senator representing Kano South Senatorial District, Senator Suleiman Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila, OFR, PhD, for his outstanding contributions to the development of the district.
The Governor gave the commendation during the “Zauren Kano Ta Kudu” programme organised by Muryar Kano Ta Kudu on Sunday, August 30, 2026, at Coronation Hall, Kano State Government House.
Senator Kawu Sumaila, who was the Guest Speaker at the event, presented his three-year scorecard, highlighting interventions in education, healthcare, youth and women empowerment, agriculture, irrigation and infrastructure.
The programme attracted political and community leaders, traditional and religious leaders, academics, youths, professionals and other stakeholders from across Kano South.
Education
Senator Kawu disclosed that 1,022 students and scholars have benefited from various scholarship and educational support programmes.
The beneficiaries include 173 health-science and nursing students, 50 beneficiaries in Islamic and Legal Studies, 25 Master’s students at Al-Istiqama University and more than 500 undergraduate students.
Five postgraduate beneficiaries from Doguwa Local Government Area also received support to pursue Master’s degrees after graduating from Al-Istiqama University.
Some scholars also receive a ₦10,000 monthly allowance to support their educational needs.
Healthcare
In the health sector, the Senator highlighted several interventions, including ₦39.693 million provided to support 101 health-science students.
He also facilitated the provision of 1,000 hospital beds and mattresses to healthcare facilities across Kano South.
One of the major projects is a 40-bed hospital constructed and fully equipped at Zarewa in Rogo Local Government Area, aimed at improving access to healthcare services for residents of the community and surrounding areas.
Empowerment
Senator Kawu said his representation has also focused strongly on economic empowerment, with nine major empowerment programmes implemented across Kano South.
The programmes included the distribution and provision of vehicles, motorcycles, tricycles, sewing machines and other livelihood-support equipment to constituents.
The beneficiaries included youths, women and other members of the communities, with the aim of promoting self-reliance and supporting small-scale businesses.
Under one documented intervention, 16 beneficiaries received ₦500,000 each to establish or strengthen their economic activities.
Education Infrastructure
Beyond scholarships, Senator Kawu said more than 3,000 school chairs and tables have been provided to schools across Kano South.
The intervention is aimed at improving the learning environment and addressing basic infrastructure challenges in schools.
Agriculture and Irrigation
Agriculture and irrigation also featured prominently in the Senator’s three-year scorecard.
He highlighted a commitment of ₦15 billion towards the rehabilitation of Kafin Chiri Dam and associated irrigation infrastructure, covering approximately 180 hectares of irrigation land.
Plans are also underway for the provision of 6,000 tube wells across the 16 Local Government Areas of Kano South to support agricultural production and dry-season farming.
The Kano State Government has additionally approved approximately ₦2.5 billion for the Garko–Sumaila/Kafin Chiri irrigation intervention.
₦95bn Federal Projects
Senator Kawu also disclosed that approximately ₦95 billion worth of Federal Government projects have been approved across Kano South.
According to the scorecard, the projects cover areas including agriculture, irrigation, infrastructure and erosion control.
The Senator stressed that effective representation goes beyond direct constituency projects, saying persistent advocacy for major Federal Government projects is also essential to addressing the wider developmental needs of the people.
Governor Yusuf’s Commendation
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf commended Senator Kawu Sumaila for his interventions, particularly those focused on education, healthcare, agriculture, irrigation, youth empowerment and infrastructure.
The Governor’s commendation, according to the statement, further underscores the importance of collaboration between elected representatives, the state government and other stakeholders in promoting development across Kano South.
Senator Kawu expressed appreciation to the people of Kano South for their continued support and confidence, while reaffirming his commitment to purposeful representation and initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life and economic prospects of his constituents.
