The Making of a Mega City: Assessing Abba Kabir Yusuf’s Urban Renewal Agenda in Kano

A city is more than a collection of buildings, roads, and bridges. It is a reflection of the vision of its leaders, the aspirations of its people, and the quality of institutions that sustain development. Throughout history, cities that have transformed into economic powerhouses did so because successive administrations understood that infrastructure is not merely an expenditure but an investment in the future. It is against this backdrop that the ongoing urban renewal programme of the Kano State Government under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf deserves thoughtful examination.

For centuries, Kano has occupied a unique place in West Africa. Long before the colonial era, the ancient city was renowned as a thriving commercial centre linking the trans-Saharan trade routes with markets across the region. Its textile industry, leatherworks, agricultural produce, and entrepreneurial culture established Kano as one of Africa’s greatest centres of commerce. This rich history places a responsibility on every administration to preserve the city’s heritage while preparing it for the demands of a rapidly changing global economy.

Today, cities compete as much as nations. Investors, industries, and skilled professionals increasingly choose destinations based on infrastructure, ease of movement, environmental quality, security, and the efficiency of public institutions. In this era of global competition, urban renewal is no longer a matter of prestige; it is an economic necessity.

The vision of transforming Kano into a modern mega city should therefore be viewed through this broader lens. Roads facilitate commerce. Drainage systems reduce the devastating impact of floods. Public spaces enhance social interaction and tourism. Street lighting improves security and extends commercial activity into the night. Efficient transport networks reduce the cost of doing business. Environmental sanitation protects public health. Collectively, these investments create the conditions for sustainable economic growth.

The present administration has prioritised infrastructure development and environmental renewal as central pillars of governance. Across the state, ongoing road construction and rehabilitation projects seek to reconnect communities, improve mobility, and stimulate economic activities. The restoration of public infrastructure and the beautification of strategic locations signal an effort to reposition Kano as a city capable of competing with other emerging urban centres on the African continent.

Urban renewal, however, should never be understood merely as physical reconstruction. The true measure of success lies in whether these projects improve the daily lives of ordinary citizens. A newly constructed road should reduce travel time for workers, increase access to markets for farmers and traders, lower transportation costs for businesses, and encourage private investment. Infrastructure acquires meaning only when it creates opportunities and improves living standards.

Perhaps one of the greatest strengths of the current approach is the recognition that development must be visible as well as strategic. Citizens often judge governments by the tangible evidence of public investment. Well-maintained roads, cleaner streets, functional drainage systems, improved schools, and revitalised public facilities inspire confidence that government resources are being directed toward public welfare.

Yet every serious development agenda must also be assessed with intellectual honesty. Building a mega city requires more than engineering projects. It demands effective urban planning, sound maintenance culture, transparent procurement processes, environmental sustainability, efficient waste management, reliable public transportation, affordable housing, digital innovation, and strong institutions capable of sustaining progress beyond one administration.

History offers valuable lessons. Many cities have witnessed impressive infrastructure expansion only to struggle later because maintenance was neglected or development lacked institutional continuity. Kano must avoid this trap. The sustainability of today’s investments will depend on consistent maintenance, fiscal discipline, accountability, and policies that encourage private sector participation.

Equally important is the human dimension of development. Physical infrastructure should be complemented by investments in education, healthcare, youth empowerment, vocational skills, technology, and entrepreneurship. A mega city is ultimately defined not only by its skyline but also by the productivity, creativity, and prosperity of its people. Human capital remains the greatest infrastructure any government can build.

There is also an important political lesson. Development should not be viewed through the narrow prism of partisan competition. Every meaningful project that improves the welfare of citizens deserves recognition irrespective of political affiliation. Democracy flourishes when governments are held accountable for their shortcomings while also receiving credit for measurable achievements. Balanced public discourse strengthens governance far more than blind criticism or unquestioning praise.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration has placed considerable emphasis on reshaping the physical landscape of Kano. While it is still too early to make a final historical judgment, the direction of policy suggests an understanding that modern infrastructure forms the backbone of economic transformation. If current efforts are sustained and complemented by institutional reforms, investment promotion, environmental protection, and social development, Kano could once again consolidate its position as Northern Nigeria’s foremost commercial and industrial hub.

The journey towards becoming a true mega city is not measured in months or political cycles. It is measured in decades of consistent planning, disciplined execution, and collective responsibility. Governments initiate the vision, but citizens, businesses, traditional institutions, and civil society ultimately determine whether that vision endures.

The future of Kano will therefore depend not only on the projects being commissioned today but also on the willingness of successive generations to preserve, improve, and build upon them. If that commitment is sustained, the dream of a globally competitive Kano will become more than an aspiration it will become an enduring legacy.
