Open Letter to Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and the Kwankwasiyya Movement

Dear Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso,

I write this not out of hatred, but out of disappointment as someone who genuinely admired the discipline, structure, and political direction the Kwankwasiyya movement once represented.

Many of us defended this movement passionately because we believed it stood for political consciousness, loyalty, courage, and long-term Northern political relevance. We believed Kwankwasiyya was more than emotions. We believed it was a movement built on ideology, structure, and strategic political thinking.

But recent developments have left many loyal supporters confused, emotionally exhausted, and politically uncertain.

In 2023, Nigerians heard clearly when you argued publicly that you had occupied more political offices and possessed more political experience than Peter Obi, and that in any serious political arrangement, Obi should rather deputise you.

Many of us agreed with you then, not simply because we hated Peter Obi, but because we genuinely believed Kwankwasiyya represented a stronger and more grounded political structure with deeper grassroots reach and long-term political identity.

Today, however, events unfolding around the NDC coalition and ongoing political alignments seem to suggest otherwise. And what pains many loyal followers most is not even the possibility of political compromise itself, because politics naturally involves negotiation. What hurts is the silence, the lack of preparation, and the emotional uncertainty many supporters now face.

A leader should prepare followers for political realities, not only emotionally energize them.

Many ordinary Kwankwasiyya supporters did not even fully understand what was happening during the recent NDC congress processes in Kano. Ward congresses came and passed quietly. Local government congresses were reportedly concluded without broad awareness among ordinary supporters. Even the state congress announcement only became widely known barely hours before it was held.

Till today, many sincere supporters still believe processes are ongoing when major political decisions may already have been strategically settled.

This is painful because Kwankwasiyya was never supposed to be just another emotional political crowd. It was supposed to be a politically conscious movement built on participation, awareness, discipline, and direction.

The truth is that supporters deserve honesty, even when the truth is difficult.

If political realities now require compromise, explain it openly. If alliances have become necessary, carry supporters along sincerely. If calculations have changed, prepare followers psychologically instead of allowing unrealistic expectations to consume them emotionally.

Movements collapse when followers are fed only hope without political orientation.

Many young supporters sacrificed relationships, opportunities, and even personal safety defending this movement online and offline because they believed they were part of something ideologically stable and politically consistent.

What many fear today is not even losing elections. What many fear is losing trust.

Kwankwasiyya became powerful because it looked different from opportunistic politics. It looked organized, disciplined, and purposeful. That image should not be allowed to fade into ordinary coalition calculations without clear communication to the people who stood by the movement faithfully.

History will always respect leaders who tell their followers the truth, even when uncomfortable.

May Allah guide all those who genuinely seek the progress of Northern Nigeria and Nigeria at large.
