The Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf has approved the appointment of the Emir of Lafia, His Royal Highness, Sidi Muhammad Bage, as the new Chancellor, North-West University, Kano.
A statement issued by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature, at the weekend, said the decision was informed by the emir’s sterling record of fairness, deep social engagement, and leadership qualities.
It said, the appointment of a retired Supreme Court Justice and revered traditional ruler reflects the university’s dedication to excellence, integrity, and national development.
Stakeholders who hailed the decision as visionary, said it also reflects the administration’s commitment to strengthening the synergy between Nigeria’s traditional institutions and its centres of higher learning.
The Emir, Sidi Muhammad Bage, was born on June 22, 1956, in Lafia, Nasarawa State and holds a diploma and an LLB from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1981.
His distinguished legal career began as a Magistrate in 1982, later ascending to the position of High Court Judge in 1992, then to the Court of Appeal in 2007, and ultimately to the Supreme Court of Nigeria in January 2017.
In March 2019, following the passing of his predecessor, Isa Mustapha Agwai I, he was appointed as the 17th Emir of Lafia, a role through which he has become widely respected as a custodian of peace, justice, and community cohesion.
By entrusting Bage with the chancellorship, North-West University, Kano, continues its tradition of drawing from Nigeria’s most accomplished and principled leaders to serve in ceremonial and advisory capacities.
His appointment is expected to inspire the university community and help steer the institution toward greater achievements.
Chairman of the University’s Council, Prof. Hafiz Abubakar, in the company of the Vice-chancellor, Prof. Mukhtar Kurawa had already presented the appointment letter to the Emir.
