The Kano State Government has taken a major step towards environmental sustainability as the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, officially flagged off the 2026 Annual Tree Planting Campaign by planting some of the first seedlings at the Emir’s Palace.
Speaking during the event, the Commissioner for Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Dahiru Muhammad Hashim, said the Emir’s participation symbolises the commitment of traditional institutions across Kano State to tackling climate change and environmental degradation.
Hashim commended the Emir for his continued support for environmental protection and sustainability, describing his involvement as a powerful endorsement of the state’s efforts to build a greener future. He also called on communities, institutions, private organisations and development partners to actively participate in the campaign.
The tree-planting initiative forms part of Kano State’s broader environmental strategy, which aims to plant millions of trees across the state to combat desertification, restore degraded land and strengthen climate resilience.
According to the commissioner, collective action from all stakeholders will be critical to ensuring the success of the ambitious programme and securing a healthier environment for future generations.
