Between Loyalists and Parasites: Defining the Circle of Influence Around the Governor

By Mohammed Babagana Abubakar

In every administration, there exists an invisible battlefield that often determines the success or failure of governance. It is not fought in legislative chambers, political rallies, or election tribunals. Rather, it unfolds quietly within the inner circles surrounding those entrusted with leadership. The quality of individuals who gain access to the ears of a governor can profoundly shape policy direction, administrative effectiveness, and ultimately the legacy of an administration.

As governments mature and political interests intensify, a crucial distinction must be made between two groups that often compete for influence around political leaders. the genuine loyalists who are committed to the success of the administration and the parasites popularly referred to as yan chori who view public office primarily as an avenue for personal gain and political opportunism.

History has repeatedly shown that the greatest threat to effective governance is not always opposition from outside government, but the corrosive influence of individuals within the corridors of power who prioritize self interest above public service. These actors often thrive by presenting themselves as loyal supporters while quietly undermining the very vision they claim to defend.

One of the most dangerous manifestations of this phenomenon is sycophancy. Sycophants rarely contribute meaningful ideas, strategic insights, or practical solutions to governance challenges. Instead, they specialize in excessive praise, selective information, and the creation of artificial political crises designed to advance their personal interests. Their goal is not to strengthen leadership but to monopolize access to it.

Such individuals often discourage honest criticism and attempt to isolate leaders from alternative viewpoints. They create an environment where only flattering narratives are welcomed, while genuine concerns from citizens, experts, and stakeholders are dismissed. Over time, this distortion of reality can lead to poor decision-l making and weaken the administration’s ability to respond effectively to the needs of the people.

The consequences are significant. When government becomes overly dependent on political praise singers rather than competent advisers, developmental priorities can suffer. Resources that should be directed toward infrastructure, education, healthcare, agriculture, and youth empowerment may become secondary to political patronage and the endless management of manufactured controversies.

For any governor committed to transformation and sustainable development, this represents a serious danger. Governance requires focus, discipline, and strategic thinking. It cannot flourish in an atmosphere dominated by individuals whose primary concern is access to power rather than service to the public.

In contrast stands the true loyalist the individual whose loyalty is anchored not in personal benefit but in a sincere commitment to the administration’s vision and the welfare of the people. Genuine loyalists understand that supporting a leader does not mean agreeing with every decision. Rather, it means helping the leader make better decisions through honest counsel and constructive engagement.

These individuals bring value to governance in several important ways.

First, they possess strategic vision. They recognize that the success of an administration is measured not by daily political victories but by long term developmental achievements. Their focus remains on policies and projects that improve lives and leave a lasting legacy.

Second, they provide candid and evidence based advice. They are willing to speak uncomfortable truths when necessary, understanding that constructive criticism is often more valuable than endless praise. By identifying weaknesses before they become crises, they help protect the administration from costly mistakes.

Third, genuine loyalists maintain strong connections with grassroots communities. They remain attentive to the realities faced by ordinary citizens and ensure that government policies reflect genuine public needs rather than the ambitions of a privileged few. Through this connection, they serve as an important bridge between leadership and the people.

The challenge for every administration, therefore, is to distinguish between those who seek to contribute and those who merely seek to consume. This requires a deliberate effort to filter the gates of power and ensure that influence is earned through competence, integrity, and commitment rather than political manipulation.

A governor’s greatest asset is not the number of people applauding him, but the number of sincere individuals willing to help him succeed through honest service and responsible advice. Leadership flourishes when surrounded by people of character and vision, not by opportunists seeking personal rewards.

Ultimately, the verdict on any administration will not be determined by political rhetoric or social media narratives. It will be measured by tangible outcomes. the roads constructed, the schools improved, the hospitals strengthened, the jobs created, and the lives transformed.

For leaders who aspire to leave a positive and enduring legacy, the path is clear. They must resist the noise of the parasites, reject the culture of sycophancy, and empower those whose loyalty is rooted in competence, integrity, and genuine commitment to progress. Only then can governance remain focused on its fundamental purpose delivering meaningful development and the true dividends of democracy to the people.
