SETTING THE SENATE ABLAZE WITH PERFORMANCE: BARAU JIBRIN’S HISTORIC 42-BILL MASTERPIECE

…From Promise to Performance: A Three-Year Journey of Historic Achievements

By Shariff Aminu Ahlan

History has a unique way of rewarding exceptional leaders whose actions speak louder than political rhetoric. In every democratic society, there emerge rare individuals whose commitment to public service transcends ordinary expectations and whose achievements become benchmarks for future generations. Such leaders are remembered not because of the positions they occupy, but because of the positive impact they create in the lives of ordinary people. Distinguished Senator Barau I. Jibrin, the Deputy Senate President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, undoubtedly belongs to this category of extraordinary leaders.

As Nigeria marks three years of the 10th National Assembly, it is both appropriate and necessary to reflect on the remarkable journey of a man whose leadership has transformed countless lives across Kano North, Kano State, the North-West region, and beyond. What began as a campaign for another term as Senator representing Kano North Senatorial District in 2023 eventually evolved into a greater national responsibility when fate elevated him to the office of Deputy Senate President. Yet, rather than allowing the position to create distance between him and the people, Senator Barau transformed it into a platform for unprecedented service, massive development, and extraordinary empowerment.

It is indeed fitting to celebrate an extraordinary senator who has distinguished himself through an outstanding legislative record. Senator Barau Jibrin currently holds the record as the senator with the highest number of bills presented in the 10th Senate, with an impressive total of 42 bills within just three years. Of these, five have successfully scaled through the legislative process and been passed into law by the apex legislative chamber. This remarkable achievement has been described as unprecedented in the history of Senate representation since the advent of Nigeria’s democratic dispensation. It is a source of pride not only for the people of Kano North but also for Kano State and the entire Northern region.

The story of Senator Barau Jibrin’s three years as Deputy Senate President is a story of vision, commitment, compassion, and tangible results. It is a story that has inspired admiration among supporters and created anxiety among political opponents who continue to struggle to match his impressive record of achievements.

Perhaps no sector better demonstrates Senator Barau’s passion for development than education. Having long understood that education remains the most powerful tool for combating poverty, unemployment, and social inequality, he embarked on one of the most ambitious educational intervention programmes in Northern Nigeria. Through the Barau Jibrin Scholarship Scheme, hundreds of students have been sponsored to pursue undergraduate studies in carefully selected Nigerian universities, while many others have been sent abroad for postgraduate studies in highly specialized fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, Robotics Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and other modern disciplines shaping the future of the global economy.

His commitment to education extends far beyond scholarships. He facilitated the establishment of the Federal Polytechnic, Kabo, with multiple approved programmes in science, engineering, and health sciences. He further pursued the legislative processes and infrastructural requirements necessary for its eventual transformation into a University of Science and Technology. He also played a pivotal role in upgrading the Federal College of Education (Technical), Bichi, into the Federal University of Education, Bichi, while facilitating the transformation of the Federal College of Education, Kano, into Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, Kano.

His efforts equally led to the establishment of thirteen National Open University of Nigeria study centres across all local government areas of Kano North, alongside additional satellite campuses and study centres that have significantly expanded access to higher education for thousands of young people.

Beyond education, Senator Barau has distinguished himself as one of the most impactful advocates of economic empowerment in recent Nigerian history. Across Kano North, his empowerment programmes have become symbols of hope and economic transformation. Hundreds of vehicles were distributed to transport associations, while thousands of motorcycles were provided to teachers, headmasters, and rural residents to improve mobility and productivity. Thousands of beneficiaries also received tricycles, sewing machines, noodle-making machines, deep freezers, bicycles, and various business support packages aimed at promoting self-reliance and reducing poverty.

In addition to these interventions, he launched a monthly capital support programme providing one hundred thousand naira each to over one thousand beneficiaries throughout 2026, creating sustainable opportunities for small-scale entrepreneurs and low-income earners to improve their livelihoods.

Senator Barau’s commitment to security has been equally remarkable. At a time when insecurity remains one of Nigeria’s greatest challenges, he has consistently demonstrated his belief that effective security requires both infrastructure and human capacity. This conviction informed his donation of one thousand operational motorcycles to the Nigeria Police Force, alongside additional operational vehicles distributed to various police formations. He facilitated the renovation of police facilities, the construction of police stations, and the establishment of a modern Police Secondary School in Kabo.

He also supported the installation of one thousand solar-powered streetlights across Kano North to improve security and enhance nighttime patrol operations. Understanding the importance of manpower, he facilitated the recruitment of numerous young people into the Nigeria Police Force, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, and the Federal Fire Service, thereby strengthening national security while simultaneously creating employment opportunities for the youth.

His contributions to agricultural development further demonstrate his understanding of the economic realities facing Northern Nigeria. Through the Barau Initiative for Agricultural Revolution in the North-West, he introduced an ambitious programme designed to boost food production, support young farmers, and strengthen food security across the seven states of the region. The initiative aims to provide billions of naira in interest-free financing for young farmers engaged in maize and rice cultivation, empowering them to increase productivity while contributing to national food sufficiency.

Infrastructure development has also received significant attention under Senator Barau’s leadership. Across Kano North and other parts of Kano State, roads, bridges, water projects, healthcare facilities, solar-powered streetlights, schools, mosques, palaces, and community centres stand as visible monuments to his commitment to grassroots development.

His interventions in road construction and rehabilitation have improved connectivity between communities, stimulated economic activities, and enhanced the quality of life for countless residents.

His passion for youth development extends beyond education and empowerment to sports and community engagement. Through various sporting interventions, hundreds of football teams across Kano North have received jerseys, footballs, and other sporting equipment, creating opportunities for talent discovery, youth engagement, and community unity.

These initiatives have provided positive platforms for young people while promoting healthy competition and social cohesion.

What makes Senator Barau’s achievements even more remarkable is that they transcend geographical, political, and social boundaries. His interventions have benefited people regardless of political affiliation, ethnicity, or social status. His approach to leadership reflects a deep understanding that public office is a trust bestowed upon leaders to serve humanity rather than personal interests.

It is therefore unsurprising that his growing popularity continues to unsettle opposition elements. While many politicians depend on propaganda and empty promises, Senator Barau has built his reputation on concrete achievements and measurable results.

While others engage in endless political battles, he remains focused on delivering projects, empowering communities, and creating opportunities for the people. The reality is simple: performance remains the most powerful political advertisement, and Senator Barau’s record over the last three years speaks louder than any campaign slogan ever could.

As Kano North, Kano State, and indeed Nigeria celebrate three years of Senator Barau Jibrin’s stewardship as Deputy Senate President, one fact stands beyond dispute. His tenure has been defined by visionary leadership, transformational projects, massive educational interventions, economic empowerment, infrastructural development, security enhancement, agricultural advancement, and an unwavering commitment to human development.

These achievements have not only improved lives but have also established a legacy that will endure for generations.

Three years after assuming office as Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau I. Jibrin has proven beyond every reasonable doubt that true leadership is measured not by titles or privileges, but by service, sacrifice, and impact. His remarkable journey remains a shining example of what can be achieved when dedication, competence, and genuine concern for the people are combined in public service.

As the future unfolds, many believe that his greatest achievements may still lie ahead. Even today, however, his record stands as one of the most impressive examples of effective representation and purposeful leadership in contemporary Nigerian politics.
