THE CONSENSUS WIZARD: FROM UNDERDOG TO POLITIC TITAN. HOW ABBA’S MASTERCLASS LEFT KWANKWASO STUNNED AND SPEECHLESS.

…When an underestimated mind finally explodes, political equations are rewritten.

By Shariff Aminu Ahlan

Politics is not merely a game of power; it is a dangerous battlefield of intelligence, ego, ambition, betrayal, calculations, hidden interests, and strategic surprises capable of turning kings into spectators and spectators into kings overnight. It is a theatre where perception often collides with reality and where a single political move can dismantle long-held assumptions and force even the loudest critics into uncomfortable silence. Today, such a scenario appears to be unfolding within the political atmosphere of our ancient city, where an unfolding drama has not only altered conversations but may have quietly begun reshaping the balance of power itself.

Ever since Governor Abba made the painful but daring decision to free himself from the heavy shadow of an overbearing political structure and distance himself from a relationship many considered politically suffocating, many observers anticipated chaos. That separation did not merely create political headlines; it created emotional reactions, bruised egos, and visible frustration. The presumed political godfather did not hide his disappointment. Through repeated remarks and emotionally charged statements, traces of anger, pain, and feelings of betrayal became increasingly visible. The departure appeared to leave deep political wounds, and for many political observers, that moment marked the beginning of a countdown.

The calculation in many circles seemed straightforward: once the issue of selecting candidates for elective positions emerged, Governor Abba would finally meet the political storm capable of exposing his weaknesses. Many believed that while governing may require administration, handling competing ambitions, desperate contestants, conflicting interests, and political rivalries demanded a different level of sophistication altogether. This was viewed as the ultimate examination, the moment where political reality would allegedly expose inexperience.

The prediction became widespread. The house would shake. Internal cracks would widen. Consensus would collapse. Aggrieved contestants would defect in large numbers. Political confusion would erupt and eventually transform the governor into an object of ridicule. Expectations became so intense that some opposition voices almost spoke with certainty, while Kwankwaso’s repeated remarks and visible concerns further fueled the belief that an inevitable political explosion was approaching.

Then the moment finally arrived.

The party leadership directed that candidates for legislative positions should emerge either through consensus arrangements or primary elections. Across the nation, this process had already generated tension. Political rivalries intensified. Personal ambitions expanded. Contestants hardened positions. In many states, old friendships transformed into fresh rivalries as individuals fought fiercely for opportunities. The expectation of conflict became natural because politics often awakens both loyalty and desperation.

Kano immediately attracted special attention. Thousands of aspirants from both the old APC structure and the new political family surrounding Governor Abba flooded the political landscape seeking various positions. Political analysts watched carefully. Critics waited impatiently. Opponents positioned themselves for what they believed would become a spectacular collapse.

But what followed shocked nearly everyone.

Instead of panic, confusion, or desperate improvisation, Governor Abba embraced an entirely different approach. Quietly and strategically, he opened channels of engagement. Meetings followed meetings. Discussions followed discussions. Aspirants from different local governments were invited, heard, persuaded, reconciled, and encouraged to view politics not as a personal battle but as a collective responsibility. Through conversations rooted in compromise, understanding, persuasion, and political maturity, an entirely different atmosphere gradually emerged.

And then came the surprise.

The governor many underestimated suddenly displayed an unexpected level of political composure and strategic brilliance. Rather than forcefully imposing outcomes, he reportedly employed patience, intelligence, calculated persuasion, and deep political understanding. He listened, negotiated, appealed, and carefully guided contestants toward common ground. What many expected to become a battlefield slowly transformed into an exercise in reconciliation.

The outcome became difficult to ignore. Though minor disagreements naturally surfaced, as they do in every political process, the larger picture told an entirely different story. The anticipated political earthquake never arrived. The expected mass defections failed to materialize. The long-awaited collapse remained absent.

Instead, something else emerged. Respect. Admiration. And perhaps, fear.

Across political circles, participants reportedly praised the governor’s simplicity, composure, depth of reasoning, and remarkable handling of a highly sensitive process. What was expected to destroy his political credibility unexpectedly strengthened it. What critics anticipated would weaken him instead expanded his influence. Kano successfully moved forward while other states struggled with unresolved disputes and chaotic internal battles resulting from failures in leadership and reconciliation.

Ironically, while some waited comfortably for political ruins and anticipated endless crisis, reality delivered a different script. The smooth handling of a process many considered explosive sent shockwaves across political camps and perhaps unsettled those who had confidently predicted failure.

Politics has always punished underestimation.

And perhaps the greatest lesson emerging from this episode is that sometimes the most dangerous political force is not the loudest voice in the room, but the quiet strategist everyone mistakenly ignored.
