Courage met chaos in Katsina State as determined residents of Gurbi community in Kankara Local Government Area stood their ground and successfully repelled a bandit invasion, forcing the attackers to retreat.
Eyewitnesses said the heavily armed assailants stormed the area in the evening but were unable to breach the community, as locals rallied together in a rare show of unity to defend their homes.
However, the aftermath of the resistance turned tragic.
Sources revealed that the attackers, angered by their failed attempt, opened fire on fleeing residents outside the community, killing more than 10 people in nearby Nagodi village.
“As I speak, there are over 10 bodies. They were brought back to Gurbi after the attackers left,” a distraught resident said.
Residents disclosed that they had earlier alerted security agencies about the impending attack, but response reportedly came only after the violence had occurred.
“We raised alarm before the attack, but security operatives arrived after our people were killed,” another source lamented.
A community insider confirmed that while Gurbi itself was successfully defended, those who fled in panic were caught in the attackers’ line of fire.
The incident highlights the worsening security situation in Kankara Local Government Area, which has witnessed a surge in banditry in recent days. Just three days earlier, gunmen reportedly attacked Zangon Kankara, burning homes and abducting residents.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities are yet to issue an official statement, leaving affected communities grieving and calling for urgent protection.
