On April 23, 2026, Kano State will stand at the epicenter of this transformation as it hosts the North West zonal launch of Energise Commercialisation Now. This landmark federal initiative, to be commissioned by Her Excellency, the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, represents a significant milestone in Nigeria’s journey toward an innovation driven economy.
For too long, Nigeria’s brilliant research outputs generated in our universities and polytechnics have remained confined to academic environments. Energise Commercialisation now is the bridge designed to carry these innovations into the marketplace. Led by the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology (FMIST) and its National Secretariat, SITOPEO-5, the programme aims to turn indigenous knowledge into commercially viable industries and exportable products.
Kano’s role as the host for the North West launch is a testament to the state’s strategic importance and his excellency Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf courageous decision to align with the Federal Government. This partnership is not merely political, it is a developmental masterstroke that brings federal investment and global goodwill directly to the doorsteps of the Kano people.
The hosting of this zonal event positions Kano to lead the regional charge by converting brain power into buying power. The programme establishes a structured Innovation Commercialisation Pipeline to identify and scale market ready inventions. Key benefits for the state include.
Sub National Resource Mapping. The programme will help identify and evaluate Kano’s unique agricultural and mineral wealth, matching them with scientific innovations to create high value products.
Job and Wealth Creation. By localizing the commercialization of technologies, the initiative aims to catalyze growth across all 44 Local Government Areas, creating sustainable jobs for our youth.
Access to Global Markets. Nigerian start ups and SMEs in Kano will be prepared for international trade platforms, including the IATF 2027, ensuring that Made in Kano becomes a global brand.
Investment Facilitation. The launch will feature Deal Rooms and industry matchmaking sessions, connecting local innovators with venture capitalists and development finance institutions.
A critical pillar of this initiative is ensuring that local innovations can compete on the world stage. The programme aligns with National Quality Infrastructure Frameworks to ensure standards and global competitiveness. During the launch, Standards and Quality Clinics will help local producers understand certification requirements.
Furthermore, as Kano becomes a hub for innovation, protecting the ownership of those ideas is paramount. The initiative supports the protection, licensing and commercial utilization of innovations through Intellectual Property (IP) advisory sessions. Successful innovations will be documented in a National Innovation Asset Register, providing legal and commercial visibility for our inventors.
The Energise Commercialisation Now initiative ties high level federal policy directly to the local government level. By mapping sub national resources, the initiative identifies what unique materials each LGA in Kano can contribute to the national value chain. State governments will support regional clusters, ensuring that industrialization isn’t just limited to the city center but reaches the rural grassroots to create widespread wealth.

As we welcome the First Lady and the federal delegation to the ancient city of Kano, we are not just hosting an event, we are launching a new era of prosperity.
