The Kano State Government has commenced a two-day capacity-building retreat for online media publishers under the auspices of the Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs. The retreat is holding in Dutse, Jigawa State.
Declaring the retreat open, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Kano State, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, described online media practitioners as critical stakeholders in the information ecosystem and partners in democratic governance.
The Commissioner noted that the retreat was organised to strengthen professionalism, ethical journalism, and responsible use of digital platforms, especially at a time when online journalism continues to shape public opinion and governance discourse.
He reminded participants that online journalism must be guided by accuracy, professionalism, ethical conduct, and strict adherence to existing laws and regulations, stressing that digital journalism without responsibility could undermine public trust.
Comrade Waiya emphasized that the Kano State Government, under the leadership of His Excellency, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, remains committed to press freedom, democratic values, and the development of journalism practice in the state. He assured participants of the government’s continuous support for initiatives that promote responsible journalism and effective information dissemination.
He further highlighted the growing influence of ICT, artificial intelligence, and advanced technologies in modern journalism, urging practitioners to embrace innovation while upholding integrity, honesty, and professionalism.
Also speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kano State Council, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Dederi, commended the Kano State Government for prioritising the training and retraining of media practitioners, describing the retreat as timely and impactful.
Similarly, the Chairman of the Online Media Association, Comrade Abubakar Dangambo, expressed appreciation to the state government for recognising the role of online publishers and investing in their professional development.
Other dignitaries present at the retreat include the Chief Press Secretary to the Kano State Governor, Mustapha Muhammad, the Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor, Ibrahim Garba, and the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Jigawa State Council, among other stakeholders.
The retreat is expected to equip participants with modern skills, ethical orientation, and practical knowledge required to enhance responsible online journalism and strengthen democratic governance in Kano State and beyond.
