The Kano state Government has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental restoration, climate resilience, and sustainable development following the formal handover of office accommodation to the National Agency for the Great Green Wall (NAGGW) and the inauguration of the National Steering Committee for the Scaling Up Resilience for Africa’s Great Green Wall (SURAGGWA) Project.
Representing Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf at the event, the Honourable Commissioner for Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahir M. Hashim, said the present administration remains focused on protecting the environment while improving the livelihoods of citizens through sustainable environmental policies and climate action initiatives.
Dr. Hashim noted that under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Kano State has restored more than 50,000 hectares of degraded land, planted millions of trees, strengthened climate governance, and implemented programmes aimed at tackling desertification, promoting environmental sustainability, and building resilience against climate change.
As part of the day’s activities, the Commissioner accompanied the Honourable Minister of Environment on an inspection tour of selected parks and urban landscape projects executed by the Kano State Government across the Kano metropolis.
He explained that the parks, which were reclaimed from previously neglected locations, are being transformed into modern recreational centres and green public spaces that promote healthier living, environmental conservation, and community interaction.
According to Dr. Hashim, the initiative reflects Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s vision of creating a cleaner, greener, and more beautiful Kano while providing residents with safe and attractive spaces for relaxation and recreation.
The event further highlighted the growing collaboration between the Federal Government and Kano State in advancing environmental sustainability, combating desertification, and supporting climate resilience initiatives across northern Nigeria.
