Subject: Urgent Appeal for Immediate Intervention on the Escalating Armed Robbery Attacks Along the Kano–Wudil Border Highway

Your Excellency,

I write to respectfully draw your attention, as the Chief Security Officer of Kano State, to a grave and rapidly worsening security challenge that is endangering lives, disrupting commerce, and threatening the economic wellbeing of thousands of citizens who depend on the Kano–Wudil highway corridor.

Reports from commuters, traders, and transport operators indicate that every Friday evening, particularly between the hours of 7:00 PM and 10:00 PM, a well-coordinated gang of armed robbers operates openly along sections of the Kano–Wudil highway. These criminal elements reportedly block the road, ambush travelers, and unleash terror on innocent citizens with alarming frequency.

This highway is not merely a local road. It serves as a strategic economic corridor connecting Kano State to Bauchi, Yobe, and Borno States, while also facilitating international trade with neighboring countries such as Niger, Chad, and Cameroon. The security of this route is therefore critical not only to Kano State but also to regional commerce and economic integration.

The activities of these criminals have become increasingly brazen. In many instances, they reportedly halt traffic for extended periods, trapping scores of vehicles and heavy-duty trucks. Their primary targets are often traders returning from the bustling Wudil market, many of whom carry proceeds from the sale of livestock, agricultural produce, and other commodities.

Beyond the financial losses inflicted on victims, the violence associated with these attacks is particularly disturbing. Numerous travelers have reportedly been subjected to severe physical assaults, beaten with wooden planks and other dangerous weapons, leaving many with serious injuries and lasting psychological trauma.

Kano first

Your Excellency, Kano has earned a reputation as the commercial heartbeat of Northern Nigeria. Wudil, as one of the state’s important commercial hubs, plays a significant role in sustaining that reputation. Allowing criminal elements to repeatedly terrorize citizens and disrupt trade along this vital route poses a direct threat to economic growth, public confidence, and the state’s broader security architecture.

If swift and decisive measures are not taken, there is a genuine risk that this pattern of organized highway robbery could expand and spread into other parts of the state, thereby creating an even more complex security challenge.

In light of the foregoing, I respectfully appeal to Your Excellency to consider the following urgent interventions:

1. Deploy Dedicated Friday Security Patrols

Establish a joint security task force comprising personnel from the Police, Military, Civil Defence Corps, and other relevant agencies to conduct intensive patrols along the Kano Wudil highway every Friday between 6:00 PM and 11:00 PM.

2. Establish Strategic Security Checkpoints

Set up temporary and mobile checkpoints at identified black spots and vulnerable sections of the route to deter criminal activities and ensure rapid response to security threats.

3. Strengthen Intelligence Gathering

Collaborate with community leaders, vigilante groups, hunter associations, transport unions, and local residents to gather actionable intelligence regarding the movements, hideouts, and operational patterns of these criminal elements.

4. Enhance Rapid Response Capabilities

Deploy well-equipped security teams with communication and mobility assets capable of responding promptly to distress calls from motorists and residents within the affected corridor.

5. Expand Community-Based Security Engagement

Encourage stronger partnerships between security agencies and local communities to improve information sharing and build an early-warning system capable of preventing attacks before they occur.

Your Excellency, your administration has consistently demonstrated a commitment to safeguarding lives and property across Kano State. The people affected by these recurring attacks remain hopeful that, under your leadership, this emerging threat will be decisively confronted and eliminated.

I therefore humbly appeal for urgent government attention and intervention before the situation escalates further.

Please accept the assurances of my highest esteem and respect.

Yours faithfully,

Mohammed Babagana Abubakar
