KIRU BRIDGE BECOMES A NIGHTMARE: RESIDENTS, DRIVERS AND TRADERS LAMENT STALLED KIRU–YAKO ROAD PROJECT

By Our Correspondent

Residents of Kiru Local Government Area, commercial drivers, traders, and other road users have expressed deep concern over the slow pace and apparent abandonment of the Kiru–Yako road project, saying the situation has subjected them to severe hardship and increased risks to lives and property.

An investigation conducted by Fame News revealed that the road construction project commenced several years ago but remains incomplete. The project is currently at a standstill, leaving motorists and residents to grapple with the consequences of the deteriorating road, particularly during the rainy season.

Speaking with our correspondent, a commercial driver, Malam Abdullahi Kiru, described the condition of the road as a major challenge for both drivers and passengers. According to him, motorists are forced to travel at very low speeds to avoid accidents caused by numerous potholes, erosion channels, and damaged sections of the road.

“The poor condition of this road has created many difficulties for us. We have to drive cautiously to protect ourselves and our passengers. The road is filled with potholes and dangerous sections, which prolong travel time and increase transportation costs,” he said.

Malam Abdullahi further disclosed that a major bridge located along the route between Yako and Kiru was demolished as part of the road rehabilitation project. However, the reconstruction of the bridge has not been completed, forcing drivers to seek alternative routes.

“The bridge was removed during the construction process, but the project was never completed. As a result, we have had to rely on the old Alhazawa route to avoid the dangers associated with the unfinished section of the road,” he added.

Another road user and trader, Malam Sani Tijjani, highlighted the economic impact of the road’s poor condition, noting that it has negatively affected commercial activities and the transportation of goods within the area.

“The condition of the Kiru–Yako road poses a serious threat to our lives and property. We are appealing to the Kano State Government to urgently address this problem, especially now that the rainy season is worsening the situation,” he said.

Further findings by Fame News indicate that many drivers deliberately avoid using the road whenever it rains due to concerns about safety, accessibility, and the unfinished bridge linking Kiru and Yako communities.

Residents of the area have therefore called on the Kano State Government, under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, to intervene urgently by ensuring the completion of both the road project and the bridge. They stressed that completing the project would significantly ease transportation challenges, boost commercial activities, and improve the safety of lives and property across the region.

As the hardship continues, residents hope that the authorities will act swiftly to address their concerns and bring an end to the difficulties caused by the prolonged delay in completing the Kiru–Yako road project.
