The Northern Youth Assembly has welcomed the nomination of Hon. Murtala Sule Garo as Deputy Governor of Kano State by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, describing the decision as a well-considered step anchored on competence, grassroots credibility, and administrative experience.
In a statement issued on Tuesday in Kano, the group expressed strong support for the governor’s choice, noting that Garo’s nomination reflects a deliberate effort to strengthen governance through tested leadership and inclusive representation.
According to the Assembly, the nomination was not only timely but also strategic, coming at a period when Kano State requires experienced hands to deepen policy implementation and sustain ongoing developmental programmes.
The group noted that Garo’s long-standing involvement in public service, party administration, and local government leadership makes him exceptionally suited for the office of Deputy Governor. It further described him as a “grassroots-oriented leader with proven administrative capacity and political maturity.”
Recall that the deputy governorship position became vacant following the resignation of the former Deputy Governor, Comrade Abdussalam Gwarzo, on March 27, 2026, necessitating the constitutional nomination process in line with relevant provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
The Northern Youth Assembly stated that Governor Yusuf’s decision reflects a broader commitment to merit-based appointments and institutional stability, stressing that Garo’s track record in governance and politics speaks volumes about his readiness for higher responsibility.
The group highlighted Garo’s previous roles as Chairman of Kabo Local Government Area, Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Kano chapter, Special Adviser to the Governor, and Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, noting that each position demonstrated his leadership depth and administrative competence.
It further observed that his experience as Deputy Governorship Candidate in the 2023 general elections provided him with statewide exposure and a deeper understanding of governance challenges across sectors.
The Assembly also commended his reputation for accessibility, discipline, and responsiveness, describing these traits as essential qualities needed in a deputy governor who would support the administration’s developmental agenda.
While calling on the Kano State House of Assembly to expedite the screening and confirmation process, the group expressed confidence that Garo would bring added value to the executive council if confirmed.
The Northern Youth Assembly concluded by reaffirming its support for initiatives that promote unity, competence, and good governance, stating that Garo’s nomination is a positive development for Kano State and the northern region at large.
