The Commissioner of Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, has reiterated the state government’s commitment to promoting professionalism and ethical standards in media practice while assuring continued partnership with stakeholders towards sanitizing the media space.
Speaking when he received the leadership of the Young Female Professionals in Media (YFPM) when they paid courtesy visit to him in his office, Comrade Waiya noted that it is a tradition of the ministry to champion ways of advancing and enhancing media and information sector in collaboration with stakeholders.
He commended the group for their commitment to maintaining professionalism, describing their initiative as timely and aligned with the mandate of the ministry of promoting responsible media practice.
“The media today is bedevilled with unethical practices, not only on social media platforms but also in the conventional media. This is a serious concern to us as a government because it tarnishes the reputation of our state and the profession itself. That is why we are committed to working with groups like yours to restore integrity and professionalism,” Waiya said.
According to him, the Kano state government has agreed to collaborate with Nigeria Union of Journalists to establish a committee comprising veteran journalists to be known as League of Veteran Journalists to design strategies that will strengthen ethical conduct in the media profession, assuring them of the ministry’s support towards efforts that are in line with sanitizing the system and enhancing professionalism.
Earlier, the Secretary of YFPM, Maryam Usman Nagado, explained that the association is the first-ever organized coalition of young women in the media sector in the state and beyond.
She said that they were at the Ministry for introduction and to solicit support and partnership through Memorandum a Understanding (MoU) for structured collaboration in areas of training, advocacy, media literacy and women empowerment in journalism.
She noted that YFPM is made up of passionate female journalists, broadcasters, and media practitioners dedicated to mentoring upcoming journalists, promoting ethical standards, amplifying women’s voices in the media and contributing to social development through responsible journalism.
The group commended the commissioner for his tireless efforts in driving positive transformation in the media industry in Kano state.
