The Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, has led a groundbreaking professional initiative with the formal induction of 72 Information Officers and public relations practitioners into the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), at a grand ceremony held at Tahir Guest Palace, Kano.

Comrade Waiya, who was among the newly inducted members and also served as the Chief Host, described the occasion as a historic milestone in the drive to reposition public communication and information management in Kano State.

In his address, the Commissioner reaffirmed the commitment of the Kano State Government to the institutionalization of ethical standards, professionalism, and capacity building across Ministries, Departments, Agencies, and Local Government Areas.

“This induction is not just ceremonial,it is a transformational step that underscores our resolve to professionalize public information services. It also places Kano State at the forefront of ethical and strategic communication in Nigeria,” Waiya stated.

He further disclosed that an additional batch of about 50 officers would soon undertake a Master’s Class in Public Relations to qualify for full membership in the NIPR, stressing that the initiative is part of a broader reform agenda aimed at building a competent, ethical, and informed public service.

By joining the NIPR, the inductees are not only gaining professional recognition but are also committing to the core values of truth, transparency, accuracy, and accountability in public service delivery.

The Commissioner commended the leadership of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations at both national and state levels for their invaluable collaboration and support. He gave special recognition to the President and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, Dr. Ike Neliaku, FNIPR, for his inspiring leadership and presence at the ceremony.

Dr. Ike Neliaku, in his capacity as President and Chairman of the Governing Council of the NIPR, formally administered the induction oath. He praised Kano State for championing the cause of professionalism in public relations and highlighted the history and vision of the Institute.

He noted that the NIPR, established in 1963 and chartered by Decree No. 16 of 1990, currently has over 31,000 registered members across the country and maintains alliances with 126 countries globally.

“This induction is only the foundation,” Dr. Neliaku emphasized. “You must grow yourselves, attend meetings and conferences, and work towards becoming Fellows of the Institute. That is how we build a strong, ethical, and vibrant communication profession in Nigeria.”

The orientation lecture was delivered by renowned journalist and communication scholar, Associate Professor Sule Yau Sule, who enlightened the inductees on the expectations, responsibilities, and structure of NIPR membership. He encouraged them to embrace lifelong learning, ethical conduct, and active participation in professional development.

In his vote of thanks, the Kano State Chairman of NIPR, Comrade Aliyu Yusuf, expressed appreciation to all stakeholders and especially commended the Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, for facilitating the realization of the ceremony. He also praised the personal commitment of Commissioner Waiya in driving the initiative to success.

The induction ceremony signals a new era of professionalism and ethical communication practice in Kano State’s public service, reinforcing the government’s resolve to promote transparency and informed governance. Certificates were presented to the inductees during the memorable occasion.
