KANO, October 3, 2026 — Fifty-two residents of Kano State have received free urological surgeries at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) during a six-day specialist medical outreach supported by the Government of Saudi Arabia and the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief).
The medical intervention was carried out by a team of specialist doctors from Saudi Arabia and was targeted at vulnerable residents who could not afford specialised surgical treatment.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, commended the Government of Saudi Arabia and the visiting medical team for their support and contribution to improving access to specialised healthcare in the state.
Governor Yusuf said the latest intervention marked the fourth surgical outreach by a Saudi medical team in Kano. He also recalled that more than 2,300 free eye surgeries were conducted in the state during a similar intervention in 2023.
The leader of the Saudi medical team, renowned urologist Dr. Ali Ibn Mahfouz, said the specialists successfully carried out the required procedures, with no complications recorded during the exercise.
The governor also recalled the case of conjoined twins from Kano who were taken to Saudi Arabia in 2023 for specialised treatment, where they reportedly spent about two years receiving medical care before returning to the state.
According to Governor Yusuf, the Kano State Government intends to further strengthen its healthcare partnership with Saudi Arabia. He disclosed that arrangements were underway toward the commencement of open-heart surgeries in Kano.
He commended the management and staff of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital for their role in the successful outreach and assured the institution of continued support from the state government.
Governor Yusuf also appreciated the Saudi Ambassador to Nigeria and the Consul General of Saudi Arabia in Kano, Sheikh Khalil Ahmad, for their contributions to strengthening healthcare cooperation between Kano State and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The governor reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure, addressing manpower needs and expanding access to specialised medical and surgical services.
