Tarauni Market Set for Transformation as Kano Govt Unveils 13-Market Modernisation Plan

The Kano State Government has announced plans to commence the renovation and modernisation of Tarauni Market on August 25, 2026, as part of a wider plan to transform 13 major markets across the state.

The government has also assured traders at Tarauni Market that they will retain their respective shops after the completion of the modernisation project.

The announcement was made on Tuesday during the official launch of the project and the presentation of shop ownership certificates to traders at Tarauni Market in Tarauni Local Government Area of Kano State.

The initiative is part of the administration’s broader efforts to improve market infrastructure, strengthen commercial activities and provide traders and customers with a more organised and conducive trading environment.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Chairman of Tarauni Market, Abubakar Muhammad Abdullahi, welcomed government officials, dignitaries, traders and other members of the public.

He expressed appreciation to the state government for the initiative, saying the planned transformation would significantly improve the condition of the market and create a better environment for business activities.

The Chairman of Tarauni Local Government Area, Hon. Ahmad Muhammad Kure, described the project as an important development for the area.

Kure said the modernisation would help boost economic activities in Tarauni and contribute to the overall economic development of Kano State.

He added that the project would provide a more organised trading environment while improving conditions for both traders and customers.

Representing Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf at the event, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, said the state government remained committed to modernising markets as part of its efforts to strengthen commerce and economic activities.

Waiya disclosed that the government plans to modernise 13 markets across Kano State, noting that the initiative was important to consolidating Kano’s position as a major commercial centre.

He commended the traders of Tarauni Market for their cooperation and support, stressing that their understanding would contribute to the successful implementation of the project.

According to the Commissioner, work on the Tarauni Market project would commence on August 25, following Governor Yusuf’s directive that the project be executed to the required standard.

Waiya further assured the traders that arrangements had been made to ensure that they would be allocated their respective shops upon completion of the modernisation.

The project is expected to improve the infrastructure, appearance and general organisation of Tarauni Market while creating a more conducive environment for commercial activities.

The distribution of shop ownership certificates ahead of the renovation is also expected to provide traders with official documentation of their ownership as the market undergoes the planned transformation.

The modernisation of Tarauni Market marks another step in the Kano State Government’s broader efforts to upgrade commercial centres across the state and create an environment capable of supporting sustainable economic growth.
