President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to immediately return to court and vacate the order freezing the bank accounts of the Osun State Government.
The directive followed concerns over the timing of the court order, which was obtained on August 5, 2026, just days before the Osun State governorship election.
In a statement issued from the Presidential Villa, Abuja, President Tinubu reiterated his commitment to the independence of anti-corruption agencies, emphasizing that the EFCC and other investigative institutions have been allowed to operate professionally and without political interference since the beginning of his administration.
However, the President described the timing of the freezing order as unfortunate, warning that it could create the impression that the Federal Government was attempting to influence the outcome of the forthcoming governorship election.
According to the President, although he had not yet received a full briefing on the reasons behind the EFCC’s action, preserving public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process remains a priority.
President Tinubu stressed that no action should be taken by any federal institution that could undermine the credibility, fairness, and integrity of the electoral process.
Consequently, he directed the EFCC to immediately discontinue the action against the Osun State Government by approaching the court to lift the freezing order.
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the rule of law, institutional independence, transparency, and the protection of democratic values across the country.
