Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has declared that Kano State is fully prepared for the establishment of State Police, describing the initiative as a crucial step toward strengthening internal security, promoting community policing, and protecting the lives and property of residents.
Governor Yusuf made the declaration on Wednesday during the inauguration of the Inter-Agencies Task Force on Drug Abuse and Trafficking at the Ante Chamber of the Government House, Kano.
According to a statement issued by the Governor’s Spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the Governor said the proposed State Police would complement, rather than compete with, the Nigeria Police Force, noting that both institutions share the common responsibility of maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety of citizens.
He explained that the two policing structures should work in partnership to improve intelligence gathering, strengthen rapid response to security threats, and boost public confidence in law enforcement agencies.
Governor Yusuf stated that Kano State has the institutional capacity, qualified personnel, and political commitment required to establish and sustain an effective State Police system once the necessary constitutional and legal frameworks are put in place.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting all legitimate efforts aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture and creating a peaceful environment where citizens can freely pursue their economic, educational, and social activities.
The Governor also noted that the inauguration of the Inter-Agencies Task Force on Drug Abuse and Trafficking reflects his administration’s determination to combat the growing challenge of drug abuse and illicit trafficking through stronger collaboration among security agencies, law enforcement institutions, and other key stakeholders.
He urged members of the Task Force to carry out their responsibilities with professionalism, dedication, and integrity, emphasizing that the fight against drug abuse and trafficking requires sustained commitment, effective inter-agency cooperation, and the active support of all stakeholders.
