The Chairperson of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Kano State, Hajiya Sa’adatu Salisu, reportedly escaped an attack in Rano Local Government Area shortly after attending a political gathering alongside Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
The event, according to sources, was organised in support of the political ambition of Senator Suleiman Kawu Sumaila and attracted prominent political stakeholders, party loyalists, and supporters from across Kano State.
Reports indicate that prior to the gathering, Senator Kawu Sumaila had cautioned supporters against attending the event with weapons or engaging political thugs. Despite the warning, allegations later emerged that some political actors arrived at the venue accompanied by suspected armed supporters.
Political sources disclosed that tension had already been anticipated ahead of the event due to the expected presence of rival political camps with longstanding political differences.
It was further gathered that Hajiya Sa’adatu Salisu initially contemplated staying away from the gathering over security concerns but was later persuaded by political associates to join the governor’s delegation without her supporters.
She reportedly participated in the programme peacefully until the conclusion of the event.
However, eyewitness accounts alleged that the incident occurred while the ALGON chairperson was attempting to leave the venue ahead of the governor’s convoy in an effort to avoid the crowd. Suspected political thugs were said to have attacked her convoy before security personnel intervened and evacuated her from the scene.
Sources claimed that the attackers pursued the vehicle, smashing its windows and causing damage to parts of the convoy vehicle during the incident.
Observers described the development as a serious security breach that could have resulted in grave consequences if not for the swift response of security operatives.
Efforts to obtain an official reaction from Hajiya Sa’adatu Salisu were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
The incident has further heightened concerns over rising political tension and violence in Kano State, particularly in Kano South, where areas such as Tudun Wada and Doguwa have remained politically sensitive due to longstanding rivalries among influential political blocs.
As of press time, security agencies had yet to issue any official statement regarding the incident.
