NUT Backs Kano Civil Service Reforms, Pledges Support to Head of Service Maimota

The Kano State Office of the Head of Civil Service was filled with excitement and symbolic significance as the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), led by its State Chairman, Comrade Baffa Ibrahim Garko, paid a high-profile solidarity visit to the office. The visit served as a strong show of support for ongoing reforms, leadership, and the administration’s commitment to public service development.

Details of the visit were contained in a press statement issued by the Director of Public Enlightenment in the office, Rukaiya Uba Sulaiman, who described the occasion as one marked by unity, pride, and renewed confidence in the leadership of the state’s civil service.

Speaking on behalf of the union, Comrade Garko commended what he described as “visible and meaningful progress” under the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. He highlighted the consistent payment of salaries, which has significantly reduced anxiety among teachers, as well as ongoing recruitment efforts aimed at addressing workforce shortages in schools across the state.

He further noted that these measures are gradually restoring dignity and stability to the teaching profession in Kano.

A major highlight of his remarks was the state government’s approval of over N4.5 billion to sponsor more than 150,000 students for external examinations, including NECO, NABTEB, and NBAIS. He described the initiative as a timely intervention that has eased the financial burden on parents and expanded educational opportunities for thousands of students.

According to Garko, prioritizing education despite competing demands reflects a forward-thinking government. He assured that teachers across the state remain committed to supporting the administration in sustaining its reform agenda.

In her response, the Head of Civil Service, Hajia Bilkisu Shehu Maimota, expressed appreciation for the visit and the recognition of the administration’s efforts. She noted that the progress being recorded is part of a deliberate strategy to rebuild trust, improve efficiency, and reposition the civil service for better performance.

She also highlighted ongoing institutional reforms, including the revival of training programmes at the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (ASCON) and targeted capacity-building initiatives for school principals, with a focus on ethics and leadership.

According to her, strengthening values and professionalism within the system is as critical as investment in infrastructure and funding.

The visit concluded on a solemn note, with members of the delegation offering prayers for divine guidance and success for the Head of Civil Service throughout her tenure.
