Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has announced the disbursement of ₦11,709,375.00 to the families of 22 Kano State athletes who tragically lost their lives in a road accident while returning from the National Sports Festival held in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The Independent Mirror reports that the athletes, part of the Kano contingent, died in a ghastly motor accident on their way back from the concluded festival in Ogun state on 31st May, 2025
The various individuals and organizations pledged financial support to the bereaved families, among them including the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Remi Bola Tinubu, who donated ₦110 million.
Also the Ogun State Government donate ₦32 million, Hon. Engr. Sagir Koki, Member representing Kano Municipal in the Federal House of Representatives, donated ₦2.2 million, as well as Volleyball Federation of Nigeria donated ₦500,000.
Additionally, Governor Yusuf announced a donation of ₦5 million and a land plot to each of the 22 bereaved families.
He also gifted ₦2 million and a land plot to each of the surviving athletes who were involved in the accident.
Altogether, each of the 22 families is expected to receive over ₦11 million in combined contributions from the various and organizations.
While addressing the families during the distribution ceremony, Governor Yusuf prays Allah to forgive the shortcomings of the deceased and grant them in Jannatul Firdausi.
